Regular vaccination is the easiest and most effective way to keep your pet healthy. At Bramalea Animal Hospital, we provide vaccinations for a number of infectious diseases. Some, like rabies, are required by law, but others such as distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus aren’t but are essential to ensure your dog’s well-being. We strongly recommend vaccination for these diseases as they can be fatal and some (such as distemper) are transmittable from other animals such as raccoons.
You should have your dog vaccinated against the following diseases:
If you bring your dog hiking, or live near wooded areas, it’s also a good idea to consider vaccinating against Lyme disease. Incidents of Leptospirosis have spiked in recent years, so we recommend vaccinating against this too.
Flea and Tick Control
We provide safe and effective prevention and treatments for fleas, ticks, and Heartworm disease. They can be applied on the skin or orally, and are easily done monthly. We do annual blood testing to detect Heartworm and 3 other tick-borne diseases, including Lyme disease. We are urging pet owners to check their pets often for fleas and ticks and to take preventative measures. If you suspect your pet has fleas, please contact us immediately to ensure you have the right treatment. If you find a tick on your pet, it is important to remove it carefully and right away. Please contact us at Bramalea Animal Hospital to discuss your pet's health and preventative treatments that are available.
As with dogs, vaccinating cats against rabies is a legal requirement in Ontario; we also strongly recommend vaccinating for the following:
We also recommend vaccinating against feline leukemia-- particularly for outdoor cats.
